Making Graphs
"Welcome to Graph Investigator "is a great place to start. Review "Types of graphs" then move on to the activities. This has been designed to help you work out which graphs are best in each situation. Of cause there will always be some trial and error as you adapt a graph to show what you want it to show.
If you are still not sure about the best graph to make, take some time and look at the StudyJams (purple) on the Symbaloo Data page below.

Task 1
Choose one of the files to download and save in your class folder.
Population dataset March 1846-1891 show the countries of birth of new arrivals in Australian and in which state they disembarked. Of particular note as the thousands of people born at sea.
or
Countries of Birth 1901 -2006 shows the countries that people living in Australia were born in.
or
Australian Population 1788 - 2007 shows how the population has increased.
or
Regions of Birth 1999 - 2009 shows the global areas people living in Australia have come from over a 10 year period.
After looking at the data, you are to make a labeled chart/graph to visually explain all or part of the dataset. If you are unsure, ask your teacher's advice.

Task 2
Using the same data as you did for task one, choose an online tool from "Making Graphs" (orange) on the Symbaloo Data page. Make another graph of the data for comparison with task 1.
Apart from needing to type or copy'n'paste the data in, what advantages or disadvantages with Excel and the online Grapher did you find? Be prepared to discuss with the class.

Wondering what to do next?
On the Symbaloo Data page below Investigate graphs (red). I recommend The Jellybean Tree. Ten move on to Interactive Graphs (teal). I recommend Frequency Diagrams, and Jewel Diver.
