Activity 4 for Lost - a Stage Two Unit - Movement and Energy (machines)
Materials
- 2 telephone books or 2 note pads
- note books
- 2 hands
Procedure
- First Experiment.Take two telephone books or notepads and carefully place half of one inside the other. Try to pull them apart. What happened?
- Second Experiment. Now interleave 10 pages from the books, making sure that the pages overlap with each other as much as possible. Can you pull them apart now ?
- Third Experiment. Now interleave as many pages as you can, making sure that they are well overlapped. Try to pull them apart. What happened ?
Observations
Record your observations in your notebook. Make a heading, 'Who is Stronger?'. Write and draw your observations. Don't forget the labels. The following questions may help you to focus.
1. Rub your hands together quickly for one minute. What happened ?
2. Did you find it got harder to pull the books apart as you interleaved more pages together?

The greater the friction the harder you have to work to overcome it.
